Preaching Christ Acts 13:14-41 July 7, 2019

(BKC [NT] p. 386)

Jesus: the culmination of history

Jesus: the fulfillment of prophecy

Prophecies fulfilled:
• Messiah would be a reproach, one at whom the people wagged their heads (Psalm 109:25, Matthew 27:39). • Crowds at the crucifixion site would stare at Him (Psalm 22:17, Luke 23:35). • His executioners would divide His clothing among themselves by lot (Psalm 22:18, John 19:23-24). • He would be given vinegar and gall for His thirst (Psalm 69:21, Matthew 27:34).

Prophecies fulfilled:
• Jesus’ cry from the cross “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” was the fulfillment of Psalm 22:1. His words “Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit” were foretold in Psalm 31:5. • His executioners did not break any of His bones, just as Psalm 34:20 predicted would happen. Zechariah 12:10 foretold the piercing of His side with a spear.

Jesus: the justifier of sinners

Hebrews 2:1–4 (ESV) Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.
