Substitution Definition: Technology is used to perform the same task as was done before with no functional change in teaching and learning. Examples: Practicing math facts on a computer rather than with paper flashcards. Typing an essay rather than handwriting it. 11
12
Augmentation Definition: Technology provides some functional benefit to the learning activity. Examples: Students take a quiz using a Google Form instead of using paper and pencil. Students use advanced feature of Google Docs to format, spell check a document. 12
13
Modification Definition: Technology provides a significant functional change to the learning activity. Examples: Students integrate audio, video and/or text to share their learning. Students use the collaboration tools to peer edit an essay in Google Docs. 13
14
Redefinition Definition: Technology allows for new tasks that were previously inconceivable. Examples: Students create a documentary video. They use technology to contact outside sources for information and publish their video to YouTube. Students create an online, interactive blog that serves as a writing portfolio. 14
