Crane Signal Basics Crane operators are trained to work according to an established code of signals, while using a signaler. Hand Signals are the preferred method.

A person qualified to give signals to an operator A person that is clearly defined as such Does a signal always need to come from a designated signaler? NO. A crane operator must always obey STOP signals from anyone.

Crane Signal Basics Responsibilities of a signaler
Be in clear view of the operator Be in clear view of the load and equipment Keep the area free of people Never direct a load over people

Crane Signals & Safety Referenced by the OSHA Standard in CFR (Subpart N) “Hand signals to crane and derrick operators shall be those prescribed by the applicable ANSI standard for the type of crane in use. An illustration of the signals shall be posted at the job site.”

When Things Go Awry… This accident occurred when the crane operator neglected to adhere to the instructions of his signaler. He overloaded the equipment, disabled the computer, and continued against the signaler’s advice.
