WHAT IS IT? Dementia- is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases.

Types of dementia Cortial Dementia- memory, thinking, behavior (brain’s cortex) Subcortial Dementia- changes in emotions & movements (below the cortex of brain) Progressive Dementia- worse over time, interferes cognitive abilities a lot more. Primary Dementia- doesn’t result from another disease (just like Alzheimer’s) Secondary Dementia- physical disease or injury

EARLY STAGE Starts off as FOGETFULLNESS! Perception Emotional Behavior Personality Cognitive Tools- such as, judgemtent or abstract thinking. Performing Tasks

Symptoms are obvious, take control.
Middle stage Symptoms are obvious, take control. Forgetting events in the past Change in sleep patterns Not speaking correctly Hallucinations Delusions Difficulty in dressing

Perform daily activities
End stage No longer understand Family members??? Incontinence Trouble Swallowing Perform daily activities Eating Dressing Bathing

Medications- memantine top one! Intellectual stimulating activities Control inflammation of body tissues Regular exercise
