The Urinary System The primary function of the urinary system is to filter nitrogenous wastes (ammonia, urea and uric acid) out of the blood and eliminate the resulting urine from the body. The Urinary System At any point in time, the kidneys contain about 25% of your blood. The blood is “filtered” in the kidney and leaves through the renal vein.
