5 Mussolini Establishes a Fascist Dictatorship in Italy
Italy in turmoil after WWI due to inflation, labor strikes Benito Mussolini, a veteran of the war, took advantage of Italy’s tumultuous conditions to emerge as a national figure, eventually forming a dictatorship In 1919, Mussolini founded the first fascist political movement-movement based on extreme nationalism in which the state is prioritized over individual liberty Oppose both communism and democracy, favors military values, violence, and strong, ruthless leadership Often arises during periods of crisis because it promises to revive an earlier era of glory (in Italy’s case, Rome) Asked by King Emmanuel III to form a government As prime minister, Mussolini quickly asserted power, taking the name Il Duce, Italian for “the leader.” He turned Italy into a fascist dictatorship within a few years, banning labor unions, outlawing opposing political parties, and censoring the press. He also employed spies and secret police to monitor the Italian people Goals were to expand industrial development and public works and return Italy to former glory of Roman Empire

6 Hitler Leads the Rise of Nazism in Germany
Fascism similarly arose in Germany after World War I. In 1919, a man named Adolf Hitler joined a small political party that later became known as the Nazi Party. Under his leadership, this party would direct a mass political movement based on a form of fascism called Nazism. Believed Aryans were superior physically and morally (why Joe Louis fight was so symbolic) Introduced the idea of Lebensraum, or “living space,” declaring that Germany needed land on which Aryan settlers could raise large families These families would conquer more territory, expanding the German empire in order to rule world Germany’s economic depression paved way for Hitler’s rise to power Hungary/starving Germans looked to new hope Hitler’s extreme nationalism appealed to many leading Nazi party to win more seats in Parliament than any other party Hitler is named Chancellor, dissolves democracy and replaces it with totalitarian government

7 The Military Takes Control of the Government in Japan
After WWI, the Japanese emperor granted civilians a greater role in government power Worldwide economic depression, however, undermined this role Militarism took hold Supplemented by extreme nationalism Western influences become rejected Focus on traditional values and culture Radical nationalists pushed for territory expansion Natural resources needed Expansion of Japanese “living space”, similar to Hitler Civilian government surrenders to militarist rebels for fear of assassination General Hideki Tojo took over as prime minister aggressive militarist- continued to develop the military and prepared the nation for war
