School Board Trustees Good evening My name If you were like me you voted for a trustee and probably didn’t hear from them again TIL the next election Time. I hope to change that. That is why I am here to help you understand the job of. Trustee and what a bd can and cannot do. Story re Walt Individual powers nada nil zilch none Power is as part of a board of 11 members who make decisions based on what is in the best interests of the students Not always agree but must go along with majority What they can and cannot do

Working Part Director Superintendents Principals Teachers and support Staff Understand the makeup of the school system Two sides first is the operational side the day to day operations At the top is the big boss Warren Hoshisaki Superintendents 10 Special needs, transportation, finance, Human Resources etc Principals 99 Almost 3000 teachers and 1300 support staff Students 36000 Students

5 The Director REPORTS to the Trustees
He reports to us at monthly board meetings We assess the reports that he gives us on such things as finance, updates on programs, school closings etc. We ask questions and then either approve them or ask for more information for the next meeting. Plans to improve math and English scores. Keeping costs inline with the budget Policies and programs that influence the success of students at all levels

6 Goals Working together to ensure that our strategic plan is in place and achieved Provide any supports he needs to achieve his goals— the most important of which is student achievement and well being Core values respect, relationships, responsibilities Ontinue to inspire!empower and support all learners to reach their full potential I matter Achieving success together Student growth Staff growth System growth

7 Trustees Responsibilities
To debate concerns brought to the Board To approve, after discussion, matters brought to the Board by the director To review the director’s performance To bring any concerns of the whole community to the Board’s attention and ensure they are heard and considered To relate back to the community decisions that affect the community and the reasons for the decisions To help parents navigate the structure of the system. Everything the Trustees do must be done with a focus On the best interests of the students Difference between school community and whole community Rules of governance and best practices both state that the involvement of the whole community is vitally important in achieving a school system that works in the best interests of the student
