4 Assessing the situation – Physical health.
Citizens were more optimistic than health and social care professionals about the state of their physical health. Slovenian medical professionals were particularly pessimistic. N=360 Dr. Martin Power

5 Mental and emotional health.
Citizens were more optimistic than health or social care professionals about the state of their mental/emotional health. Slovenian medical professionals were particularly pessimistic. Dr. Martin Power

6 Improving health. Citizens were similarly more optimistic than health and social care professionals about what they could do to maintain or improve their health, with the exception of Croatian health and social care professionals. Dr. Martin Power

7 Communication and patient understanding.
Doctors felt that communication could be improved, expect in Portugal where a majority felt that communication was good. Doctors felt that patients would benefit from a greater basic medical knowledge, though in Austria and Ireland doctors were divided on this. Dr. Martin Power

8 Communication and time
Other than in Austria, patients felt they generally understood what their doctor was telling them. Patients in Portugal and Ireland were most positive about doctors spending sufficient time with them. Whereas, Croatian and Austria patients were least positive. Dr. Martin Power

Health is more than pills’ (Austria). ‘Smart Patients is an interesting contribution to an important new theme. It would be lovely to have more contents in the training modules’ (Austria). ‘very manageable to use and view’ (Ireland). ‘is there an easy read version for people who have communication disabilities?’ (Ireland). ‘The language is clear and presents relevant information’ (Portugal). ‘I think all the materials are very well written, the information is clear and very pertinent’ (Portugal). ‘Some modules are a bit difficult to understand. 19 Reflections and learning.
European dimension – A great experience to work with people from other cultures and systems and to see and learn how others do things. EU projects have a lot of paperwork attached and an experienced co-ordinator is essential. Information technology – There are many things you would not necessarily think of – copyright on images and translation of each onscreen term, eg. click, next, back. Language – translation is very time consuming (and expensive) and tends to slow the process down.
