Science is all about inquiry.
What are the steps to the scientific method? Discuss in your group.
13
Scientific method pre-assessment
Name the different parts of the scientific method?
14
The Nature of Science Scientists are like _____________________ trying to solve mysteries. Scientists gather information and __________________________ in their search for answers to questions. A _________________________ is an educated guess about a possible solution to a mystery. detectives research hypothesis

The Nature of Science cont.
B. Scientists use a problem-solving procedure called the __________________; it includes identifying a problem, gathering information, making hypotheses, testing the hypotheses, analyzing results, and drawing conclusions. Scientific method
16
LT: I can describe the steps of the scientific method
Lt: I can maintain an orderly working environment.

C. __________________ is a process of observing, studying, and thinking about things to gain knowledge to better understand the world. 1. Any attempt to find out ________________ and ________________ things look and behave the way they do is a performance of science. 2. _________________ is the study of Earth and space. Science how why Earth Science

D. Testing, or ______________________, is an important part of science. 1. ___________________ are the different factors that can change in an experiment. a. An experiment should be designed so that only ______ variable at a time is tested. b. The variable that changes, the one being tested in an experiment, is the _________________________. experimenting variables one Independent variable
19
The Nature of Science cont.
c. Constants are variables that ____________ change. d. A _______________________ is the variable being measured. 2. A ________________________ is a standard to which results can be compared; the same experiment done with the same variables, except it omits the _______________________ variable. 3. For results to be valid or reliable, test should be repeated ________________ times. do not dependent variable control independent many

4. _________________________ and recording data and discoveries are important parts of an experiment. a. Data and observations must be analyzed to draw _______________. b. Unexpected ______________________ may be important and should be recorded, as well. Observing conclusions results
21
The Scientific Method The Scientific method is a way to think about problems and a way to solve them. Scientists do not always follow the steps of the scientific method in order. However, after a problem is solved, a scientist can use the scientific method to explain how the solution was reached. The scientific method can be broken down into the following parts: Record and analyze data State the problem or ask a question Experiment Gather information on the topic Form a hypothesis State a conclusion
22
Create your own experiment
Homework Create your own experiment Determine the controls, independent variable, dependent variable, and the constant(s). Write a question that you are trying to answer with your experiment: (hint—what are you trying to find out?)
23
Learning Targets 1. I can name and describe the steps of the scientific method. 2. I can follow the steps of the scientific method to solve a problem. 3. I can record data in a table or chart. 4. I can construct a graph that shows the results of the investigation.
