Cyanobacteria have very diverse morphologies (different shadings), ranging from unicells — some even without thylakoids — to complex, branching filaments. Different studies have placed the plastid progenitor (‘?’) either with early- or late-branching cyanobacteria; the study by Ponce-Toledo and colleagues [4] favors the former scenario, affiliating the plastids with the early-branching Gloeomargarita clade.
