1 Chemistry – Mar 2, 2018 Agenda Homework review Electron Transfer
Get out Driving Forces 1 -2 For a HMK Check on Acids and gases P3 Challenge – ACT Friday #1-11 Objective – Driving forces continued Assignment: Finish Driving Forces WS 2 Agenda Homework review Electron Transfer Mixed ID Driving Forces After HMK Check, find your assigned problem to share. Work together to solve if not complete yet.

2 4) Transfer of electrons: Oxidation-Reduction
How to identify a redox reaction Is there an atom that is an element on one side and in a compound on the other side? (often Single Replacement reactions) Is there an element that has a different charge ion on both sides? (Many synthesis and decomposition reactions.) Transfer of electrons is a driving force. Elements are driven to complete octets. Note: All combustion reactions are driven by electron transfer.

3 Activity Series For single replacement reactions, the determining factor is the place of the two metals in the activity series. In general, a metal can displace any of the metals which are lower in the activity series: Ex: Cu + AgNO3  Cu(NO3) Ag Ex: Cu + Fe(NO3)3  Cu (NO3)2 + Fe Ex: Zn + Fe(NO3)3  Zn (NO3)2 + Fe

4 Reactivity Series for Halogens
In general, a halogen can displace any of the halogens which are lower in the activity series for halogens. Notice that the activity series of halogens is just their order within the periodic table. Ex: F NaBr  2 NaF + Br2 Ex: Br NaCl  2 NaBr + Cl2

5 Practice ID driving forces
Balance, ID type, ID driving force _____1. _____H3PO3  _____H3PO4 + _____PH3 _____2. _____Fe2O3 + _____C  _____CO + _____Fe _____3. _____FeS + _____O2  _____Fe2O3 + _____SO2 _____4. _____NH3 + _____O2  _____NO + _____H2O _____5 ._____Si + _____S8  _____Si2S4

6 More Practice ID driving forces
_____6. _____Hg2CO3  _____Hg + _____HgO + _____CO2 _____7. _____SiC + _____Cl2  _____SiCl4 + _____C _____8. _____Al4C3 + _____H2O  _____CH4 + _____Al(OH)3 _____9. _____V2O5 + _____HCl  _____VOCl3 + _____H2O _____10. _____Ag2S + _____KCN  _____KAg(CN)2 + _____K2S

7 Exit Slip - Homework Exit Slip: :
When the sulfuric acid in acid rain reacts with the calcium carbonate of marble statues, the reaction transforms the marble into calcium sulfate which crumbles away and also produces some water and carbon dioxide. 1) Convert to an equation including state descriptors. 2) Balance ) Identify the type classification. 4) Identify any driving forces. What’s Due? (Pending assignments to complete.) Finish Driving Forces Worksheet 2
