Objectives Identify the Impact of Vaccine Shortage Issues in Your Practice Understand the Impact of Vaccine Shortages on Immunization Coverage Levels Identify the Benefits of Tracking Vaccine Deferrals Using an Immunization Registry Understand ASIIS Deferral Tracking Features ASIIS Program

Vaccine Shortage Issues
Children do not receive needed immunizations on schedule Parents have to bring children back when supply is replenished Parents receive mixed message about the importance of vaccines on time. Providers are burdened with additional tasks Providers need to prove vaccine supply needs Immunization coverage levels decline ASIIS Program

The DTaP shortage began in 2000
The DTaP shortage began in On March 16, 2001, CDC stated in the MMWR (MMWR 2001; 50:189—90): “DTaP vaccine is recommended as a five-dose series: three doses given to infants at ages 2, 4, and 6 months, followed by two booster doses at age months and at age 4--6 years. Some vaccine providers may have difficulties obtaining sufficient supplies of DTaP to vaccinate all children in their practices. If providers have insufficient quantities of DTaP, priorities should be given to vaccinating infants with the initial three DTaP doses and, if necessary, to defer the fourth DTaP dose.” In the MMWR 2002; 51(27); , The CDC announced the end of the deferral of the fourth dose of DTaP. arch 16, 2001 / 50(10); Note: July 2003 NIS results reflect the impact of the DTaP vaccine shortage and subsequent DTaP vaccine deferral.

Benefits of Integration with Registry
Eliminates manual tracking and recall of patients. Registry can be used to: Document deferrals Generate recall lists Justify use of vaccines during a time of shortage Leverages existing technology available Users already trained on registry functions —additional features easy to learn ASIIS Program
23
Conclusion Integration with a registry creates a more efficient process for tracking and follow up for everyone – patients/parents, providers and administrators Timely recall of children minimizes the effect that shortages have on immunization coverage levels Tracking vaccine deferrals is a critical component of an immunization registry ASIIS Program
