What Are Taboos? Are formed when people experience something major/traumatic Can happen at any age, more likely to form around young – puberty Happened throughout the centuries Ex: Incest They are like Fetishes, but they are not the same thing Taboos – Interests that usually go against the norms of society or beliefs Fetishes – A variety of things that can cause arousal (feet, body image, other physical characteristics) Like fetishes, taboos come in a variety of “harshness” Usually very extreme would have the suffix –philia Keep in mind, that different countries/beliefs alter what taboos can be Also affected by the communities that the person has grown in.

Region And Religious Based
One problem is that they depend on the region There are some that are constant. EX: Pedophilia More specifically, sexual taboos are against the everyday practices Includes: Laws, Religions, Social Groups, etc. When it comes to religion, views were based their Scriptures Ex: Catholics and Christians would use the Bible has their base The Bible view point on Homosexuality, Zoophilia, and Adultery: “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman: that is an abomination. You shall not have sexual intercourse with any beast to make yourself un- clean with it, nor shall a woman submit herself to intercourse with a beast: that is a violation of nature. You shall not make yourselves unclean in any of these ways, in these ways the heathen made themselves unclean.” [Lev. 18:22-24]3 “If a man has intercourse with a man as with a woman, they both commit an abomination. They shall be put to death; their blood shall be on their own heads.” [Lev. 20:13-14] This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-SA.

The Public Eye Throughout history, public has view changed
Some are more appropriate than others today Ex: 1900’s and earlier, Homosexuality was seen “forsaken” Through the views of the religious communities Military had the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Some were into forms of jokes, Still seen as out of place in society, but easier to address Incest and even Beastility are usually the main topics, online only The rest are rarely brought up This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC. Companies and Sex Companies have used "soft core" images and themes for advertising Well known example: Carl's Jrs. Common topic for research and analysis Covers more than just sexual topics In a 1997 study: "Women were more distrubed by sexual themes and ideas when compared to men." "However the overall analysis shows that there is an overall negative evulation of the advertisments."
