1 CPU Starter on shared area for pupils as they log on. L1 starter activity

2 Starter: Do not use the computer. Answer the following: What do you think a CPU is?

3 What is a CPU? CPU stands for Central Processing Unit
It is the engine of any computer Anything that needs to execute an instruction needs a CPU Phone, Ipod, home computer, vending machine.

4 Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The CPU is the engine of the computer It fetches, decodes and executes instructions which are stored in memory. This makes your computer function Without a CPU your computer would not even switch on

5 Fetch, Decode, Execute Step 1: CPU fetches the instruction from memory
Instruction fetched from memory CPU Instruction decoded then executed Memory Answer returned to memory and instruction carried out Step 1: CPU fetches the instruction from memory Step 2: CPU decodes the instruction so that it understands it Step 3: CPU executes the instruction and sends back its answer

6 Cache Cache is a very quick type of memory It is part of the CPU chip
Activity: research a Cache in pairs and write a description that you can share with the rest of the group.

7 CPU Cores Modern CPUs have two (dual core) or four cores (quad core)
Activity: Research dual core and quad core individually then compare your findings with a partner.

8 Activity Create a presentation or a document to describe the CPU. Here are some questions you will need to consider: -What is a CPU? -What does it do? -What does it look like? -What is Cache? -What is a core?
