2 Hazardous Waste Hazardous waste is any material that are toxic or highly corrosive or explode easily. Dyes, cleansers or solvents Toxic heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury or zinc Dyes, cleansers or solvents PCBs Radioactive Wastes 2019年10月1日 Unit 12: Waste

3 Recycling Hazardous waste must be disposed of responsibly.
An example of the careless waste disposal was in Love Canal, Niagara Falls, New York 2019年10月1日 Unit 12: Waste

4 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
(RCRA) requires producers of hazardous wastes are handled from the time they are make to the time they are placed in an approved facility. 2019年10月1日 Unit 12: Waste

5 The Superfund Act Superfund Act allows the EPA to sue private industries who illegally dump hazardous waste Make them pay for clean up. 2019年10月1日 Unit 12: Waste

6 During the 1940s, Hooker Chemical and Plastics Corporation used Love Canal, a sparsely populated area located in Niagara Falls New York, as a chemical dump site lining it with impermeable concrete. However, residential and school constructions in the 1950s resulted in many breaches of the protective lining, gradually seeping out toxic wastes into the soil polluting the groundwater and the air. Of the 240 buried chemicals that had been identified, eleven were suspected carcinogens, notably benzene, which can cause serious health problems. According to a report, the residents were stricken with a disturbingly high rate of miscarriages, birth defects, nervous disorders and cancers. Love Canal has become a testimony to one of the greatest human blunders and of the constant need for seeking environmentally safe ways of managing toxic waste. 2019年10月1日 Unit 12: Waste

8 Managing Hazardous Waste
United States produce 275 millions of tons of hazardous waste each year. Produce Less Instead of using hazardous chemicals, use non-hazardous, reuse materials. Reuse By reusing solvents, the overall production and therefore less waste. 2019年10月1日 Unit 12: Waste

9 Managing Hazardous Waste
Incineration Many substances can be rendered harmless through burning. Incineration is expensive. Conversion Into Nonhazardous Substances Acids and bases can be neutralized. Cyanides can be combine with oxygen. Produces carbon and nitrogen 2019年10月1日 Unit 12: Waste
