“The Mainichi” English-language daily was inaugurated in April 1922 and boasts the longest history and highest quality of any such publication in Japan. In 2001, it went solely online and is one of Japan's largest online English newspapers. Overseas readers, mainly in North America, account for one-forth of all page views, and The Mainichi is known in many countries for its vigorous reporting on Japanese news and issues.
The news site covers a wide range of topics including Japanese politics, economics and society as well as culture, sports and entertainment. Moreover, editorials as well as respected columns such as “Global Perspective" and "Yoroku" carried in the Japanese Mainichi Shimbun daily are translated and carried on The Mainichi website. The site also runs "Haiku in English," to which many people overseas submit haiku poems, and other unique sections. Moreover, The Mainichi communicates Japan's social situation and trends through its photo and video news pages.
