7. Sketchbook Painting Procedures
Painting in your sketchbook can be easy, just follow these simple steps!
Gather your supplies.
Open your sketchbook, making it flat, and choose a page to work on.
Place a thick piece of scrap paper behind your sketchbook page so the paint will not bleed through.
When you are done, place your sketchbook on the correct drying rack, leaving it open to dry!

Ideas for Painting Materials
Paint with watercolors or liquid watercolors.
Paint with acrylics.
Paint with tempera.
Draw with water soluble markers and paint with water.
Combine more than one type of paint.
Apply glue, let it dry, and paint over it.
Ideas for Painting Techniques
Try abstract expressionism, and add splatter paint.
Paint a layer of water and apply colored tissue paper to the top. As it dries, watch the pigment bleed into the sketchbook paper.
Apply paint to a plastic bag and press it onto your sketchbook page.
Use crayons to create a wax resist and paint.
Create a pool of water colors on the page and blow it with a straw or air from your mouth.

12. Sketchbook Weaving Procedures
Did you know that you can weave in your sketchbook? That’s right! A few simple cuts can turn your sketchbook into a fiber arts masterpiece. Here is how…
Choose a weaving template page from your sketchbook (or create your own!). Bend the pages back so you are looking at just one!
Cut along the horizontal lines to create the warp.
Use ANYTHING you like to create the weft: paper scraps, yarn, etc.
Weave the weft pieces using a pattern of your choose.
Secure the ends with glue or tape!

Cut the warp with curvy lines.
Cut the warp with zig zagged lines.
Carefully tear the paper to make the warp.
Use pinking shears or other shaped scissors to cut the warp.
Cut the warp extra thin.
Cut the warp extra fat.
Vary the size of the warp pieces.
Ideas for Creating your Weft
Use scrap paper.
Use strips of old news paper or magazines.
Make a painting and cut it into strips.
Use yarn or fabric scraps.
Ideas for Developing a Woven Pattern
Go beyond the “ABAB” pattern to create a new possibility… ABBA, ABCCBA, AABB, etc.
Skip the pattern and weave randomly.
Create a pattern by combining materials (i.e.. Newspaper and construction paper, etc.)

18. Sketchbook Sculpture Procedures
Your sketchbook might be flat, but the art inside doesn’t have to be! Try creating some “pop up” paper sculpture using folded elements or tabs!
Choose a pop up template or create your own!
Cut on the solid line, then fold on the dotted line.
Make two cuts into the folded paper.
Use your finger to pull that new tab forward, creating a “chair shape”.
Create artwork out of scrap paper and tape or glue it to that tab!
Use your creativity to add more tabs or varying sizes and positions.

20. Sketchbook “Cut Through” Procedures
If you cut through one page of your sketchbook, you can reveal another!
Sometimes this can be used to make artworks that have a relationship. Here is how….
Choose cut through template or create your own!
Bend the paper slightly and make a small cut with your scissors.
Un bend the paper and carefully put your scissors in the hole, cutting the shape you need.
Draw on both pages, making a creative relationship between the two artworks.

21. “Cut Through” Prompts Ideas for Creating a “Cut Through”
Create a door.
Show the view through a window.
Do not cut all the way, creating a hinged tab that folds.
Cut a circle or triangle to vary the shape.
Use a warm color scheme and cut through to a cool color scheme.
Create multiple “cut throughs” on the same page
Create cut throughs from organic shapes.
Cut through more than one paper, creating a composition across several pages.
Make a realistic drawing and cut through to an abstract version.
Draw the first page, pass the sketchbook to a classmate.
Create an artwork using one medium and cut through to a new medium.
Collaborate with a friend: create a drawing yourself, and then cut through to reveal something they have created on another page.
