1 GIS As a Tool for Pavement Management Carlos Chang Albitres
Texas A&M University Department of Civil Engineering CVEN 689 Applications of GIS to Civil Engineering Instructor: Dr. Francisco Olivera Average PCI = 65 Street Network Classified by Pavement Condition Index ABSTRACT A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a powerful tool to manage and analyze data referenced to a geographic location. A GIS-Pavement Management System (GIS-PMS) integrates tabular data and geographic features being able to retrieve the information rapidly and effectively. The major advantage of a GIS-PMS is in serving as an analytical tool to perform queries and visualize the results in theme maps. METHODOLOGY 1. Integrate data gathered from different sources Show street network data in theme maps 3. Identify treatment and budget needs 4. Analyze the impact of Maintenance and Rehabilitation strategies 5. Visualize the impact of Maintenance and Rehabilitation strategies on “what if” theme maps 6. Explore new approaches to visualize the data using GIS capabilities Budget Needs over a 20 Year Period Minimum PCI Grid Theme CONCLUSIONS The possibility to integrate a Pavement Management System with other infraestructure management systems using GIS as the heart of a central database is feasible. A global system based on GIS technology will allow agencies to share, and compare information among databases, avoiding project conflicts, and making more coherent decisions. 04 / 28/ 03 Linking Tabular Data with Geographic Features Maintenance and Rehabilitation Treatments in the Next 3 years Streets in Good Condition after 20 Years for a 40% Funding Scenario
