Personal Teaching Strategy
Let’s begin writing your strategy together. Have your assignment, research grid, paragraph sample, and your textbook spread out in front of you. Eliminate any additional materials to decrease clutter and confusion.
3
STEP 1: Brainstorming List the three techniques you have chosen to use. Use the textbook as a catalogue from which you can select the techniques you feel are best suited to you. You may also want to use the handouts provided during the presentations.
4
Step 2: Developing an Essay Outline
Look at what you have listed and insert in in the top line of the research grid. Complete filling out the research grid. You will probably go back and add things or remove things as your research continues.
5
STEP 3: Outlining a Topic/Body Paragraph
Create an introductory statement for you body paragraph by stating what you are about to discuss. Specify which required core knowledge or required skills and abilities you would like to discuss as items within your sub-task. I still need to tweak this. List each item as indicated in your essay outline. This will help you structure your paragraphs in a way that works for you.
6
STEP 4: Developing your Paragraph
Use active reflection to develop examples that help demonstrate your ideas. Make sure that your examples are clear. Organize the items you choose and the examples that demonstrate them in a logical sequence that reinforces the “roadmap for reading” that was posed in your introductory statement.
7
STEP 5: Proofreading your Paragraph
If you are unsure of how much information is necessary, refer back to the S.E.X.Y. format for writing. State it. Explain it. Provide an eXample WhY is your example relevant?
8
S.E.X.Y Format State it: Clearly state the professional characteristic (core knowledge or core skill/ability) that you feel is important and at which level of expertise you currently are. Explain it: Explain/discuss how this professional characteristic will be developed further through formal education, on-the-job learning, etc. This will be your proposed strategy for obtainment. Provide an example: Provide an example from your own experience which demonstrates your current knowledge, skills, and/or abilities. Why is your example relevant?: Explain how your example demonstrates your current knowledge, skills, and/or abilities within the specific sub-task that you are discussing. Transition into your next item/topic (sub-task).
9
Roadmap for Reading/Writing
As each of your paragraphs develop, you will begin to see a roadmap for reading develop. Each item within a paragraph will occur in the sequence proposed in your introductory statement. Each item will be discussed following the proposed sequence. The items listed will be brought to closure through your closing statement.
10
Essay Outline Are you beginning to see the big picture? Just as each paragraph has followed a sequence, so will your essay. Your essay outline will assist you in developing this sequence.
11
