2 British Imperialism in India
British East India Company led the colonization of India. The Company was granted a charter to do trade in India by Emperor Jahangir during 1600s. With decline of Moghul power and the defeat of French the Company later got the right to collect taxes in Bengal, Bihar and some other provinces of India. The Company employed local soldiers called the sepoys. In 1857 mutiny broke out among company’s Indian soldiers.

3 The Company termed the mutiny as “Sepoy Mutiny” or “Great Rebellion”
The locals called it “the First War of Independence” The rebellion was subdued by the Company. Then British Parliament took over India. Queen Victoria was crowned as the Empress of India.

4 British Rule in India Queens appointed viceroys to rule India.
The viceroy ruled India with a civil service that had staff. British rule lasted until 1947.

5 Benefits of British Rule
It brought a strong central government and stability They built railroads and Industry. Telegraph and postal service were also introduced. A public education system was also introduced Human rights threatening customs were brought to en End. E.g. suttee A common legal system was introduced

6 The Cost of British Rule
Local industry was destroyed Farmers were forced to grow cash crop instead of food. A famine was resulted which killed millions. Heavy taxes broke the peasants. Indian resources were taken to Britain. Top jobs were held by white Europeans. British disrespected both Hindu and Muslim Cultures Locals were never considered equal to the whites.
