2 Population Pyramids and the Demographic Transition Model

3 Demographic Transition Model
Outlines natural stages of growth and development Demographer tool to analyze and understand population numbers and change

4 Population Pyramids Analyze individual region population growth development trends Data organized in cohort groups A tool used by demographers (YOU) Created by graphing a series of horizontal bar graph lives at intervals of 5 years Shape- demographer classifies pyramid into four major categories (You will get these as we go along)

5 Demographic Transition Graph

6 A possible Stage 5 would include countries in which fertility rates have fallen significantly below replacement level (2 children) and the elderly population is greater than the youthful population.

7 DTM with 5 Stages

8 Demographic Transition Detailed

9 Demographic Transition Model
Stage 1- high birth, high death=small growth High infant mortality Low life expectancy Common a few hundred years ago, and in developing countries today In Stage 1, which applied to most of the world before the Industrial Revolution, both birth rates and death rates are high. As a result, population size remains fairly constant but can have major swings with events such as wars or pandemics.

10 Population Pyramids- Early Expanding Stage 1 Of DTM
Wide base= high birth rate Narrow top= short life expectancy *few countries today fall in this category
