1 Next Steps What will the school do to support The students?
What do Students need to do? What can parents do to help? Useful websites

2 Next Steps – but to what?

3 Next Steps – but to what?

4 Next Steps – Don’ts Don’t think of your Apprenticeship or University course as your final destination, more as the first step of where you will end up. Don’t think that apprenticeships are an easier option than university. Don’t leave it to the deadline / results day. Don’t just think about the money – is it the best way for you?

5 Money – fact or fiction (or half truth?)
Average wage for all apprenticeships is £170 pw. (£8840 p.a.) Graduates earn £500,000 more over their life time than non-graduates Starting salaries from some non-Russell group universities are the same or lower than those completing degree apprenticeships.

6 Next Steps – Questions to consider
Does your chosen route: Prepare you for your ‘career’ in the best possible way? Do you need a specific course? Is it a role or a sector that you are actually most interested in? Is it the most interesting way of doing it? Does it suit the way you learn? What is the mix of learning and hands on work? How does the learning take place? There’s nothing wrong with studying a subject because you love it. No two universities or employers are the same – how do they compare? E.g. How long is it, modules – content and degree of choice, internships/work placements, collegiate, campus or city based? Does the apprenticeship guarantee a job at the end of it?

9 How will the school support students?
What won’t tell you exactly what to do. We’ll advise or suggest or question or signpost you. We’ll nag you to complete applications. Ultimately it is your future and you need to make the decision on what to do.

10 What do students need to do?
Make use of the workshops tomorrow to help guide them in their future direction. Reflect on how they ‘stand out’ from a vast pool of candidates for their applications. Do they need to secure work experience or voluntary work or carry out some wider reading? Really consider what they want to do in the future and research what that will take to get there. Talk to potential employers and look up typical offers from universities. What competencies do you already have and which need work? Where is the evidence? Spend the summer holidays completing their personal statements and CVs. Consider visiting universities (open days or summer schools) and employers over the summer.

11 What can parents do to help?
Talk to your children about what they want to do. Help students to visit universities or potential employers. Use your networks to help find advice / potential work experience or relevant voluntary work. Research has shown that approx. 30% of entry level vacancies go to those who’ve had previous work experience or an internship. 68% of those internships were organised by friends or family. Read through your child's personal statement and CV over the summer. Are there any things that you think they’ve missed out? Look at the websites where students will be signed up to with them.
