2 Confucius A Chinese teacher and philosopher 551-479 B.C.
Chinese called him Kong Fu Zi (Master Kong) Was mostly self-taught. Desired to be a government official Believed to be China’s first professional teacher.

3 Confucius He searched for a ruler to follow his teachings, but was not successful. Died believing his life was a failure. His teachings were followed for many centuries.

4 Confucius’ Teachings He passed on the teachings of other wise people.
Tried to persuade rulers to reform. Sought to bring peace, stability, and prosperity to China’s kingdoms. Never wrote down his teachings. His students gathered them after his death.

5 Confucius’ Teachings These writings made up a philosophy.
A system of beliefs and values. His goal was to bring order and peace to China. At the time, there were many wars and rulers fought for control of land. He believed if people could be taught to behave properly, order and peace would follow.

6 Confucius’ Teachings People should know their place in the family and society. Respect people above and below their status. People in authority must set good examples. Similar to the “Golden Rule” – Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

7 Religious Traditions Although a philosophy, it served as a religion for many people. Ancient China had many kinds of religious beliefs. Confucianism functioned as a religion for its followers. Another philosophy, Taoism, rivaled Confucianism.

8 Confucius Influence Confucius’ teachings have a major effect on Chinese government workers. Serve as basic training for civil servants. Because of Confucius, government posts became based on merit. Have to pass an exam. He did not consider himself wise or good, but left a lasting impression on China.
