Bellringer: At the end of the discussion between Ralph and Jack, there doesn't seem to be a resolution to the growing conflict between what needs to be done (Ralph's position) and what someone wants to done (Jack's position). Describe a situation you've experienced where the conflict at hand went unresolved. What happened later in that situation? What advice would you give to Ralph or Jack? Explain.

What is Jack concerned with? What is Ralph concerned with? Why does Jack want to paint his face? Who does he want to sneak up on? What does Jack think when Ralph sees the smoke on top of the mountain? What do the boys realize at the end of this chapter?
