1 Cycling of Matter Unit 4

2 Write all statements then label them as true or false
Decomposers break down organisms and other organic materials within the soil. Decomposers release nutrients back into the environment as matter is cycled. Decomposition adds nutrient-rich humus to soil to improve crops. Decomposers are at the base of the food chain and provide food for primary consumers.

3 Warm-Up Please write the question and the answer
What happens to living matter as it moves through the ecosystem? a. Matter, like carbon, cycles through the ecosystem. b. Matter remains constant without changing in the ecosystem. c. Matter flows through the ecosystem. d. Matter moves through the ecosystem in one direction losing energy as it moves through the environment.

4 Carbon cycles through the Earth system
Carbon cycles through the Earth system. During photosynthesis, carbon is released from wood as carbon dioxide when wood is burned. released by organisms as carbon dioxide. broken down and released from the remains of living organism. converted by plants from carbon dioxide to glucose.

5 The Carbon Cycle

6 What happens to the carbon when a plant or animal dies?
It is released into the air as carbon dioxide. It is extracted from the ground by scavengers. Decomposers break it down and it forms into fossil fuels over time. Cars use the carbon dioxide to produce energy to move.

7 What does this picture show?

8 What is missing from this organic compound?
a. Carbon b. Oxygen c. Sulfur d. Nitrogen

9 The carbon cycle represents: The cycling of matter The flow of energy
Warm-Up The carbon cycle represents: The cycling of matter The flow of energy The transfer of matter The cycling of energy

10 During composting what is released besides carbon and nitrogen?
Water Heat Worms Fruit

11 The roll of decomposers in a compost bin is …….
a. To recycle and reuse all organic matter. b. To release the carbon from the organic matter. c. Prevent the compost bin from smelling. d. Provide heat to the compost bin.

12 POP QUIZ! Fill in the elements that make up CHNOPS C H N O P S

13 Warm-Up Which is true of organic compounds?
a. They contain Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Sulfur and produce all the molecules that support life. b. They only need hydrogen and are only found in air. c. They only contain carbon and are only found in living things. d. They are not needed for organism survival.

14 Write the whole question & all of the answer choices
All of the following are examples of  organic compounds except? a. C6H12O6 b. C12H22O11 c. CH4 d. NaCl
