THE DETERMINATION OF WATER IN A COMPOUND

HEADING NAME: DATE: PARTNERS: TITILE:

PURPOSE Carefully heat a measured sample of a hygroscopic ionic compound. Determine the water of hydration of the compound. Complete the chemical formula of the compound.

MATERIALS Hygroscopic Compound Beaker 250 mL Safety Glasses
Wash bottle Bunsen burner Clay triangle Crucible with lid (cover)

MATERIALS Crucible tongs Distilled Water Eye Dropper
Ring Stand / Iron ring Balance / Scale Desiccator Balance

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Safety glasses must be worn at all times.
Handle all chemical according to the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Clean up any spills and inform the teacher immediately. Never taste any chemicals in the Lab. Never mix any chemical unless instructed.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Clean and dry all the lab equipment after the conclusion of the lab. Wash your hands after the conclusion of the lab. Never horse around or play practical jokes during the lab. Replace any cracked or broken glassware.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Know the location of the safety shower and eye wash station. Work only in your assigned group. Tie back long hair / roll up long sleeves. Never reach over an open flame. Never leave bunsen burner unattended. Never put anything hot on a balance.

PROCEDURES Construct a setup for heating a crucible as demonstrated by the following diagram. Draw apparatus setup after all written procedures. Apparatus / Diagram:

PROCEDURES Measure and record the mass of a clean, dry crucible with cover. Cool the crucible and lid to room temperature, placing it inside the desiccator. Measure their combined mass, and record the measurement on line 3 of the Data Table.

PROCEDURES Use a spatula or glass stirrer to break up any large pieces of the substance by pressing the pieces against the wall of the crucible. Set up a lab burner and ignite the burner away from the crucible. Adjust the burner to get a small flame. Gently heat the crucible for about ten minutes.

PROCEDURES Turn off the burner. Cover the crucible and allow the sample to cool for about ten minutes inside the desiccator. When the crucible is cool enough to handle safely, measure and record the mass of the crucible, cover, and contents. Heat the crucible of your sample for five more minutes, allow it to cool, and measure and record its mass.

PROCEDURES Continue heating the sample for five minutes at a time, until you have two mass measurements that are within about g of each other. Turn off the burner. Cool the crucible, lid, and contents to room temperature. If time constraints force you to complete the experiment on a second day, place the crucible in a desiccator until you can continue your work.

PROCEDURES Dispose of your sample as directed.
After completing your data table complete your analysis with the questions form Data Analysis section. Write each and every questions for your pre-lab and data analysis section.

PRE LAB QUESTIONS Write each and every questions and answer for your Pre-Lab Question Section from Page 824 chapter 12 section of your text book (#1-10).

Post Lab Questions Write each and every question located under the “Questions for your discussion” section of your Laboratory Handout. Write a conclusion paragraph after your post lab questions and turn in the Lab Notebook the next day of class.
