3 Why do we have a Child Sexual Abuse Prevention program?
McMartin Pre-School Accusations made in 1983 against family members running pre-school – 7 people, 321 charges involving 48 victims Pre-trial and trial ran six years, from , most expensive criminal trial in history Resulted in no convictions, charges dropped Sex-abuse hysteria, bullying of purported victims Jerry Sandusky Former assistant football coach at Penn State University In Nov 2011, indicted on 52 counts of child molestation Sentenced up to 60 years in prison Abuses may have begun in 1970s, but indicted cases were from Used a non-profit charity to select and groom victims 3 others convicted due to their part in cover-up Pamela Rogers 27-year-old elementary school PE teacher, Tennessee Sex with a 13-year-old boy (3 month relationship) in 2004 9-months in jail, 7 years probation, register as sex offender Arrested several more times for sending explicit videos/photos and sexual texts to the boy Overall spent about 10 years in jail Why do we have a Child Sexual Abuse Prevention program? Protect children Protect workers and our church Inspire confidence in community Required by our insurance provider Right thing to do Chet Warren Catholic Priest Sex with at least 10 victims from 1957 to 1993 Church settled with his victims for over $1M All victims were girls (81% of Catholic priest victims are boys)

Child sexual abuse is… Touching activities Intercourse Stimulation Non-touching activities Inappropriate conversation Voyeurism, exhibitionism Porn Child sexual abuse is not… Touching necessary for medical care, grooming, or other non-sexual activity Non-sexual gestures of affection Age-appropriate sexual behavior between minors

6 Preferential (serial) abuser
Types of abusers Fixated on one sex/age/body type Actively seeks and grooms victims Many victims, moves on to avoid detection Little to no remorse when caught Preferential (serial) abuser On-going relationships Lack of accountability “Secret bond” Incidents marked by No preconceived victim type Takes advantage of situations Fewer victims, wider range of behavior More likely to confess or feel remorse Situational abuser

Reporting an Incident Reporting Responsibility “Mandatory reporter” Must report within 24 hours Legally protected (if done in good faith) Not exempted under “privileged communications” laws Reporting Process Notify Education Committee for assistance Call hotline If you believe a child is in immediate danger, call 911

If you are in the group class, make sure that you sign the sign-in sheet If you are completing this individually, make sure that you notify Steve Moore that you have completed the training Next is the screening process If you have not been screened by FBCK before, you must complete the “Ministry Application Form” If you have been screened by FBCK before, you must complete the “Ministry Renewal Form” with any updated information Return the form to Steve Moore, who will conduct the screen The CSAP plan, blank forms, and additional resources can be found on our website in the “Member Resources” section
