The Short Answer Questions (SAQ) follow the Multiple Choice portion of the AP exam.
You have 40 minutes.

The Short Answer Questions (SAQ) follow the Multiple Choice portion of the AP exam. Using the picture below, answer all parts of the question that follows A. Identify ONE way the interaction above represents the Tang Dynasty’s hegemony over neighboring states. B. Explain how the picture represents a continuity in Chinese imperial history. C. Explain on way in which the interaction between China and central Asia changed after the collapse of the Song Dynasty. There are 4 SAQs, and each one has 3 parts.

Students select short-answer #3 OR short-answer #4.
You must answer questions 1 & 2, but you have a choice of answering either question 3 or 4. SAQ Advice Pay close attention to the verbs in the question
Identify = provide specific information about the topic, but you don’t have to elaborate or provide evidence. Explain = Provide specific information about the topic and use evidence to support your answer. Always provide the “how” or “why” to a question asking for “explain.”

Spiraling of skills A Response Part A requires a fairly simple answer. You can probably answer with a sentence or two. Part B is more complex, asking you to explain what you know about the prompt. Part C will probably ask for higher levels of analysis, for you to compare what you know with other things that are going on. B Response C Response

How to Answer Your answers must stay inside the border lines on the page. Remember, this is a short-answer. Two to three sentences per part should be sufficient. Your answer must be in complete sentences, do not use bullet points. Don’t quote! If it asks you to explain a quote, use your own words.

How to Answer Read the passage written by Abu Ubaydallah Al-Bakri.
Identify ONE way in which Islam successfully spread to Sub-Saharan Africa by the eleventh century. Identify ONE way in which Islamic practices were changed as the religion spread to Sub-Saharan Africa by the eleventh century. Explain ONE factor that may have influenced the point of view of the author of this passage.

How to Answer Possible answers to section a:
Muslim merchants from North Africa and Southwest Asia participating in Trans-Saharan trade shared their beliefs with the peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa. The adoption of Arabic for written records and employment of Muslims in government encouraged the adoption of Islam in West African kingdoms. Arab and Persian Muslim traders brought Islam to the East African coast as a result of Indian Ocean trade.

How to Answer Possible answers to section b:
Islamic practices related to gender separation were relaxed due to African cultural traditions that encouraged greater interaction between the genders. Islamic belief was blended or syncretized with traditional African belief including the incorporation of the veneration of one’s ancestors. Islamic architectural styles in the building of mosques were modified and shaped by African architectural styles and the available building materials.

How to Answer Possible answers to section c:
As a Muslim scholar living in cosmopolitan Spain, Al- Bakri may have been concerned about Muslim communities in Sub-Saharan Africa that seemed to be holding onto traditional customs and beliefs. As a Muslim scholar who may have held traditional views regarding monotheistic belief and abstaining from alcohol use, Al-Bakri may have been troubled by what he interpreted as “the worship of idols” and use of “intoxicating drinks.”
