Japanese Memorial Terminal Island Prior to World War II, the fishing village in Terminal Island was home to many Japanese who made the South Bay their home. The village was thriving with culture, business, and social life. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese residents were rounded up and shipped to internment camps throughout the American West. They left behind their homes, businesses, many of their possessions, and opportunities for a better life. The village was then destroyed along with all buildings, and most memories of that it existed.

Japanese Memorial Terminal Island Decades later, a monument was put up to pay tribute to the families, fishermen, and residents who lived there. While the “Old Village” is gone, the statue and the Shinto Shrine that stand there today show the spirit of this Japanese community that once lived and worked in the South Bay.

Japanese Memorial Terminal Island Visit the Japanese Memorial Terminal Island Website and read about the history of the area. Write a short summary of your feelings of the situation and how it was handled. If you agree with the process that took place, then explain why you feel that way. If you disagree with the process that took place, then offer a alternative plan that you feel would have worked. Visit the actual Japanese Memorial on Terminal Island and examine its location and the area surrounding it. Understand that almost everything you see was once a Japanese fishing village full of families, homes, and businesses. Take a selfie with you and the statue and/shrine (print or the selfie) Write a second short answer detailing your feelings after you have visited the memorial. Have your feelings changed, grown, or stayed the same. Explain why.
