1
Fermentation SWBAT compare and contrast the input and output materials of cellular respiration and fermentation
2
Starter What is the overall purpose of cellular respiration?
What is the overall chemical equation for cellular respiration? What is the major purpose of each step of cellular respiration?
3
Cellular Respiration Recap
Cellular Respiration = “Aerobic Respiration” Requires oxygen (O2) Produces large amounts of ATP (38 molecules) Also produces water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) Occurs in eukaryotic (plant and animal) cells
5
Fermentation Fermentation = “Anaerobic Respiration”
Does NOT require oxygen (O2) Produces small amounts of ATP (2 molecules) Also either produces lactic acid (muscle cells) or alcohol and carbon dioxide (yeast) Occurs in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
