CNN 10: So What? Input/ Output Expectations

3 Input/ Output Assignments
We will begin watching CNN 10 and other news and video clips to practice vital skills that you will need for every paper you ever write, not just for this class, but for ALL your courses throughout high school and beyond. You must develop the ability to analyze and synthesize information, and come to your own conclusions. While we watch CNN 10, jot down the facts of each story on the top of your Input/Output sheet. You don’t have to worry about grammar, spelling, conventions, etc. After the episode is over, you will choose one of the stories and write AT LEAST five high quality sentences about the story, synthesizing and analysing the information and creating your OWN output. Remember to use formal, essay-style language and proper grammar in the output section. You can imagine this as a mini-body paragraph.

4 #1: DATE YOUR CNNs!!! If there is no date, you receive no grade. This goes for EVERYTHING in your binders. Each CNN 10 is a grade. If there is no date, I don’t know which column to enter your grade, so you won’t get one. I’m not stopping to hunt through other students’ binders to try to compare stories to figure out which day your entry is from because you can’t take two seconds to write down the date. It will be a ZERO. NO MAKE UPS.

5 #2: At least FIVE SENTENCES are REQUIRED!!!
Each CNN 10 is worth 20 points. Each sentence is worth 4 points. It says it right on the form: “Write at least five sentences.” DO THE MATH! If you don’t have five sentences, you won’t get the 20 points! However, if you have really insightful sentences that show you put a lot of thought into your entry, then that CAN make up for a missing sentence or two.

6 #3: Output IS NOT A SUMMARY OF THE NEWS STORY!
This activity is meant to not only give you information on what is going on in the world, but to allow you to practice the skill of synthesizing information, which is a vital skill. You need to take the news story presented and think about it, and what it means in the big picture. Not every story will affect you personally, but think about what you already know about the information and use that to come up with your own questions, conclusions, and opinions. You need to learn to THINK DEEPLY about these topics! Your summary of the story goes at the top of the sheet, but build on that on the output section just as you are to build on your examples in the essay. Entries that are all summary of the story will receive a ZERO.

7 #4: Use the CNN 10 Input/ Output sheet!
If you need a sheet, ask a classmate for an extra or ask me. When students write these on regular paper they tend to forget vital information like the DATE. USE THE FORM! I made them for a reason!

8 #5: Organize CHRONOLOGICALLY!!!
This also goes for EVERYTHING in your binder. When I open to your CNN 10 section, the first entry I should see is the first entry we did this year on 8/20 (A day) or 8/21 (B day)!!! I should NOT see the most recent entry first! This will LOSE YOU CREDIT during the next binder check!

9 #6: Show some EFFORT! This is a college level English class with a large focus on WRITING. Therefore, we need to practice writing every day and you should take care in EVERYTHING you write. I should NOT be seeing incomplete sentences, homophone errors, lowercase proper nouns, or filler sentences in your CNN 10s. If you’re going to elevate your writing to the caliber expected in AICE, you need to put that into practice on a daily basis. “Words/Phrases of Death” will cost you points on your CNN 10s. USE PROPER GRAMMAR, PUNCTUATION, AND SPELLING! THINK about what you’re writing! Laziness and lack of effort will COST YOU!

10 #7: Don’t get complacent!
Just because you received 10s on your CNN 10s thus far DOES NOT mean you will continue to do so with the same quality of work! Now that I have given you SPECIFIC expectations, you will be held to these standards!

11 Non-Example 1 The piece I am going to choose is ice on the moon. In this piece, discoveries have shown that there has been potential ice on the moon. Now they have made it final that there is ice in the moon. This means that the moon could be a new power source. This would be very valuable to our planet.

12 Non-example #2 There is a hurricane coming toward Hawaii. Hawaii is getting prepared for the hurricane to hit but the forecast is not sure it will hit. So people are still preparing for the hurricane even if it doesn’t hit them. That is why Hawaii is getting ready for it.

13 Non-example #3 The piece im goin to choose is Venezuela’s oil. In this piece it explains that Venezuela is struggling with their oil prices. Venezuela benefits greatly in oil industry and throught the years the oil prices are getting low.

14 Non-Example #4 Was it necessary for Donald Trump to punish the CIA director because he bad-mouthed him? Did it have to go that far? How does that affect us as a whole? How does that affect us world- wide? Does that leave us in danger because Donald Trump does unnecessary things? Will he do another unnecessary decision with even more serious issues?

15 Binders Expectations

16 #1. ORGANIZE YOUR BINDERS!
In case you haven’t noticed, I have OCD about certain things, which includes your binders. However, this is not the only reason I want you to have them a certain way. Organizational skills are attributes that will serve you well throughout your educational career and your life, and it is important that you learn them now. In addition, I have 146 binders to grade each time I do a binder check. You have only ONE to worry about in this class. When your binder is organized, it saves me time. When it’s not, it wastes my time. I hate waste. Don’t waste my time. Unorganized binders that waste my time will LOSE YOU POINTS!!! By “organized” I mean: Sections separated by dividers and in the proper order Sections organized chronologically All assignments clearly dated and titled The binder itself labeled with AT LEAST your name and period No loose papers falling out (I will employ the “shake test” during the next binder check)

17 #2: Quality of Notes As you know, I’m changing my approach this year and having you print the PowerPoints and add to them rather than spend entire class period taking notes. HOWEVER, this does not mean you will not be taking notes at all! Notes are part of this class and part of your grade, and as this is a college level course your notes must be college level! This means lots of EFFORT and no LAZINESS. When you have printed the powerpoints, I will still check your binders for notes ON them. You are expected to ADD to the printed notes by annotating them, adding information I give you verbally, writing down any questions and answers you may have, and anything else that will add to your store of information.

18 #2 Quality of Notes (cont.)
On days when you do not have powerpoints printed, and you must take notes, keep in mind that a good rule of thumb is that you should have AT LEAST a page of notes if I’m showing a powerpoint, most often times much more. This DOES NOT MEAN you write notes until you fill up a page and then you’re done! You MUST include ALL the information given! Notes MUST be: Titled and Dated (or no points) Neat and organized (include the headings on each slide! Skip lines between sections!) COMPLETE! (You don’t have to write EVERY WORD on each slide, but you MUST have ALL the information given!) Legible! (If I can’t read it, I can’t grade it)
