1 13-1: Exploring Periodic Data
A periodic function is a function that repeats a pattern of y-values (outputs) at regular intervals. 1) 5 2) No

2 One complete pattern is a cycle.
The period of a function is the horizontal length (the distance along the x-axis) of one cycle.

3 Is the function periodic? If it is, what is its period?
c. If the period of a function is 4 seconds, how many cycles does it have in a minute? d. What is the period of a function that has 180 cycles per minute?

4 The midline is the horizontal line midway between the maximum and minimum values of a periodic function. The amplitude is half the difference between the maximum and minimum value of the function.

5 Problem 3: Amplitude = 3, y=1. 3a) Amplitude = 1. 5; y=-0. 5
Problem 3: Amplitude = 3, y=1 3a) Amplitude = 1.5; y=-0.5 3b) Amplitude = 1.5; y=0.5

6 4) A sound wave can be graphed as a periodic function
4) A sound wave can be graphed as a periodic function. Name another real-world example of periodic functions. Ferris wheel, heart beat, sun distance from horizon, swings
