2 Three Considerations of Local Church Membership 2

3 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. 2 Cor. 7:11 The Corinthians were still humble enough to receive correction, be instructed, and change

4 3 Considerations of Church Membership
Humility

5 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? Cor. 1:10-13

6 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him. Hebrews 5:9
If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed Thess. 3:14 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 2 Thess. 1:8 You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? Gal. 5:7

7 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, Cor. 10:5 We must discipline our mind

8 3 Considerations of Church Membership
Humility Obedience

9 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. Eph. 5:32
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior Eph. 5:22-23 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Eph. 5:33

10 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct Peter 3:1-2

11 What softens this mental discipline?
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Pet. 3:7 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church Eph. 5:28-29

12 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Jn. 14:15
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. Jn. 15:13-14 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 1 Jn. 5:2-3

13 3 Considerations of Church Membership
Humility Obedience Love

14 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 1 Jn. 4:20-21

15 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things Cor. 13:4-7

16 3 Considerations of Church Membership
Humility, to be teachable Obedience, to change Love, as our motivation
