1 Chemistry of Life 2.1 The nature of matter
Living things are made up of chemical compounds. Chemical reactions that occur when we breathe, eat, and drink keep us alive. There is a chemical reaction to describe how we breathe, photosynthesis and more

2 Big Idea: Matter and Energy
What is matter? Matter is anything that occupies space and has a mass Atoms are the basic unit of matter Atoms are composed of 3 sub atomic particles

3 What is the lightest subatomic particle: protons, neutrons or electrons?
What can be found in the nucleus of an atom? Protons and neutrons

4 Electrons remain outside the nucleus because of the energy of their motion
They call the surrounding an electron cloud. Electrons move about in orbitals (a three dimensional ring around

5 Isotopes: atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons
Because they have the same number of electrons, all isotopes have the same chemical properties The number of neutrons and protons is called the mass number

6 Chemical Compounds Compounds consist of atoms of two or more elements that are joined by chemical bonds in a fixed proportion.

7 Covalent bonds… think cooperative… sharing
Covalent bonds… think cooperative… sharing. The structure that results when a compound is formed by covalent bonding is called a molecule The electrons will move throughout the nucleus of both atoms Ionic bonds valence electrons are transferred from one atom to another. Valence electrons are those found on the outer shell. The positively and negatively charges atoms are known as ions.
