What is a Map? Maps can be an important source of primary information. But what is a map? This is a deceptively simple question, until you're asked to provide an answer -- you may find it far more difficult than you think. Yet we encounter maps on a daily basis.

What is a Map? The media uses them to pinpoint the location of the latest international crisis, many textbooks include them as illustrations, and we consult maps to help us navigate from place to place. Maps are so commonplace; we tend to take them for granted. Yet sometimes the familiar is far more complex than it appears. "What is a map?" has more than one answer.

Was yours close to this one? "A representation, usually on a plane surface, of all or part of the earth or some other body showing a group of features in terms of their relative size and position."

To be considered a map, the following must be included:
B – Border O – Orientation L – Legend T – Title S – Scale Border – Line around the outside, defining the edge of the map

Orientation – Includes an orientation, that is a North arrow – either Grid, Magnetic or True
Legend – Symbols to identify objects Title – A title allows us to define what the map is exactly of Scale – A numerical representation of the maps general size and position

Activity You are to draw a map. This map could be of the classroom, your bedroom or even your house! Whatever you choose is your choice however it should be in the finest detail. Remember to use bolts! Include – Bookcases, whiteboard, chairs, desks, windows, heaters, TV, door etc
