CONSTRUCTION OF NEW AND REHABILITATION OF EXISTING NON-MOTORISED FACILITIES IN BIRKENHEAD

Improve overall safety of pedestrians
Providing universal access to pedestrians, disabled persons and cyclists

4. Location
Locations
The non-motorised transport facilities between West Coast road and Atlantic Beach road.
The walkways will be constructed on the south-west side of Birkenhead drive.

5. Description of Work Pedestrian Access
Gradual transition between the roadway and the pedestrian walkways to avoid tripping hazards.
Tactile pavers will be used at ramps. This will alert pedestrians that are blind or visually impaired to the presence of hazards of the line of travel.
The ramps will provide safer access to cyclist and disabled persons.

6. Description of Work Intersections
Double access at intersections will be provided where space is available to insure safe crossing.
This will localise the crossing of pedestrians and cyclist and provide safe crossing space.
The ramps at intersections will remove the grade difference between the sidewalks and roadways.

7. Walkways Typical walkway structure
Layerworks under walkway will be constructed by ripping and compacting the existing material, a sub-base will be constructed with a G5 material and the surfaces with a 30mm Asphalt layer to provide a smooth surface.
The width of these walkways is dependant on the location and will differ throughout the project. They will be between 1.2 meters and 3.0 meters wide.
