3 I. Korean War ( ) i. Korea is a small country off the east coast of China, just west of Japan. ii. After Japan was defeated, Korea was split up into North Korea and South Korea. They were divided at the 38th Parallel. a. North Korea controlled by U.S.S.R.- Communist b. South Korea controlled by USA- Capitalist iii. In 1948, both USA and U.S.S.R. leave Korea. The governments left behind followed their respective beliefs

Truman asks the UN for help, and since Soviets are away from the council, he gets what he wanted. viii. 16 nations helped the USA in the Korean War, but 9 of 10 soldiers was American USSR was boycotting the UN because the west weren’t recognizing mainland China’s seat in the Security Council. 10 So do you think the Korean war was a successful UN operation?

11 Americans suffered over 33 000 dead and 100 000 wounded soldiers.
Over a million Korean and Chinese soldiers died and as many as 2 million Korean civilians. 3.7 million children lost their parents. The border was renegotiated to the 38th parallel. The sentiment in the USA was that containment was successful.
