1 Day 4 Law of Conservation of Energy
SC.7.P11.2: Investigate and describe the transformation of energy from one form to another. Also assess SC.6.P.11.1 Explore the Law of Conservation of Energy by differentiating between potential and kinetic energy. Identify situations where kinetic energy is transformed into potential energy and vice versa. SC.7.P.11.3 Cite evidence to explain that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only changed from one form to another.

2 Objectives Students will be able to describe how energy is conserved in the real world by citing evidence. Students will be able to describe real world situations where energy is transformed.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed it could only be transferred.

7 Energy Going In = Energy Going Out
EQ: A regular light bulb only converts 10% of electricity into light. What happens to the other 90%? Some of the energy lost to thermal energy Radiant/Light Electrical Thermal

8 Efficient Energy Transfer
Why do you think this slide is labeled efficient? Do you think that only 10% of the electricity is being converted into light? Make sure you point out that it is not a regular light bulb. It is an energy saving light bulb. This light bulb limits the electrical energy from becoming thermal, therefore it requires less electricity to light uo the same room.

9 Recall… Thermal Energy as Waste
Energy transfers are not 100% efficient. 100% of the electrical energy is being transferred into 75% Radiant and 25% Thermal. Same amount energy going in and out but 25% was wasted energy, not used. Remember not used doesn’t signify destroyed. Refere to the previouse slide as an example of the second bullet.

10 Discuss Transfer of Energy
Where is the most potential energy at in this system? When the pendulum (ball) is lifted the highest. Where is the potential energy transferring to kinetic? As soon as the pendulum (ball) moves down again. When is the kinetic energy transferring back to potential? When the pendulum moves up in height again. Why does the pendulum swing slow down? Some of the energy is transferred to thermal and sound.

How is energy conserved in our day to day life? Explain Chemical Energy Thermal Energy Mechanical Energy Feces Inform students the food we eat remains in our body in many forms including muscle and then we use it as needed. The energy is still on earth even after we release it.
