1 Cells and the Immune System
AQA: 3.4, EdExcel: 7.4 OCR: 6.1.3

2 Notes for Teachers We recommend using these resources as an introduction to or recap of the Cells unit The video also works well when studying genetic engineering, and as a recap of other principles in cells and genetics, or when considering real-world scientific methods and applications Use either slide 5 or 6 depending on whether or not you are also using the accompanying worksheet

3 The Human Immune System
When a pathogen enters your body, your immune system is there to fight against it so you stay healthy. Sometimes the immune system needs some help. What are some medicines or treatments that help the immune system fight disease?

4 The Role of White Blood Cells
Draw diagrams showing the interactions between a pathogen, an antigen and an antibody Use your diagrams to tell another student why white blood cells can’t normally fight cancer

5 Biohacking the Human Body
Complete the worksheet as you watch the video

6 Biohacking the Human Body
You will answer these questions as you watch the video: Define these keywords: helper T cell, cytotoxic T cell, B cell, phagocyte How does a cancerous tumour form? Why do T cells and B cells struggle to fight against cancer?

7 The Role of White Blood Cells
Return to your diagrams of the interaction between pathogens, antigens and antibodies from before the video Use your diagrams to tell another student why white blood cells can’t normally fight cancer, and how CAR T-cells can fight cancer

8 Discovering and Developing a Therapy
Split into two groups to prepare for an ethics committee interview. One group will be the ethics panel, the other group represents scientists at University College London, where Dr Martin Pule is developing CAR T-cell therapy. Dr Pule is applying to trial this new therapy for the first time in a patient who has acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Scientists: present your previous experiments and plans for this trial Ethic Committee: prepare questions to evaluate the ethics and methodology presented, decide whether or not you will approve the trial and explain why
