What will the role of a teacher look like in 20 years time? Students could spend time in groups considering the future role of the teacher. What will classrooms look like? Given

4 is a branded graphical presentation developed and used by the American research, advisory and information technology firm Gartner to represent the maturity, adoption, and social application of specific technologies. The hype cycle provides a graphical and conceptual presentation of the maturity of emerging technologies through five phases. 1Technology Trigger A potential technology breakthrough kicks things off. Early proof-of-concept stories and media interest trigger significant publicity. Often no usable products exist and commercial viability is unproven. 2Peak of Inflated Expectations Early publicity produces a number of success stories—often accompanied by scores of failures. Some companies take action; most don’t. 3Trough of Disillusionment Interest wanes as experiments and implementations fail to deliver. Producers of the technology shake out or fail. Investment continues only if the surviving providers improve their products to the satisfaction of early adopters. 4Slope of Enlightenment More instances of how the technology can benefit the enterprise start to crystallize and become more widely understood. Second- and third-generation products appear from technology providers. More enterprises fund pilots; conservative companies remain cautious. 5Plateau of Productivity Mainstream adoption starts to take off. Criteria for assessing provider viability are more clearly defined. The technology's broad market applicability and relevance are clearly paying off. If the technology has more than a niche market then it will continue to grow.

You may also want to look at some of the elements on the Hype Cycle Describe what this area is about and any potential issues or considerations that would need to be taken into account should it become part of education in the near future. Have students spend some time in groups exploring/researching one of these trends (or others from the Horizon Report) Report back on what these entail.

7 The course summary In the course outline we identified the standards from the Australian Teacher Standards that are most relevant to the use of digital technologies in the classroom. These include 2.6 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) – implement teaching strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students  3.4 SELECT AND USE RESOURCES - demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including ICT, that engage students in their learning  4.5 USE ICT SAFELY, RESPONSIBLY AND EQUITABLY – demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching  Now that you are at the end of this course, spend some time documenting what you know about each of these standards and what they mean for you as a primary teacher.
