1
Electric Current and Energy
Key concepts You should be able to describe and calculate current using I = q / t You should be able to describe and calculate voltage using V = E / q
2
What is a Coulomb? A Coulomb is a unit used to measure the amount of charge. One electron has a charge of -1.6x10-19 C How many electrons are contained in the following charges: -6.4x10-19 C -4.8mC 3.2x10-19 C 1C of negative charge
3
Calculating Electric Current I = q / t
Current (I, measured in Amps, A) equals charge (q) in Coulombs (C) per second So, 1 Amp = 1 C/s How many electrons will flow past an ammeter in one second with a current of 1 A? How long will it take 360 Coulombs of charge to flow through a circuit where the current is 500mA?
