2
What are the types of environmental issues?
Three Categories: Population growth Resource use Pollution
3
Population Growth World Population Why did the population begin to increase so rapidly? Can this growth continue? Do you remember the terms about populations: limiting factors and carrying capacity?
4
Population Growth Exponential growth Birth rate and death rate
What factors allow the human population to grow? Medicine Technology Agriculture
5
Resource Use Natural Resources are the materials we use from the earth
Trees Water Oil, coal, gas Minerals Space (land) How do we get these natural resources? How do we know how much there is? How do we share them?
6
Resource Use Renewable resources: always available or replaces shortly
Wind, sunlight, water Nonrenewable resources: not replaceable Metals, minerals, oil, coal What category would trees be in?
7
Environmental Introduction
Pollution Land Water Air Examples: wastes, chemicals, noise, heat, light Water 1 Water 2
8
Solutions are out there
Billions in Change

Environmental Project (4th)
Environmental Introduction Environmental Project (4th) Read the text pages given and complete any questions/blanks Make a vocabulary list and define words Complete a graphic organizer Create a presentation PowerPoint 4th period only
10
How will you learn more about environmental issues?
Six biomes: rainforest, desert, deciduous forest, tundra, grassland, boreal forest Two water ecosystem: marine and freshwater You will complete a product for an environmental issue affecting a biome
11
Learning more about environmental issues
Work plan Self (website, paper, or poster) Group of 3-4 (PSA video or presentation) Biome Pick what biome you will do Issue Examine the issue to go with the biome (text and web resources) Present Plan and create your project product
12
What are some key parts of my product?
Biome overview: climate, species (2 plants, 3 animals), and locations Problem: What is it? What is the cause? How bad is it? Solution: Explain how it can be fixed
