‘Scanning is reading a text quickly in order to find specific information, e.g. figures or names’ Q) In what situations would scan reading be useful? ‘Intensive reading involves learners reading in detail with specific learning aims and tasks.’ Q) In what situations would intensive reading be useful? Discuss: 1) Picking up a newspaper on the tube then leaving it there at your stop 2) Looking up your team’s football result whilst waiting for the bus. 3) Reading the new novel of your favourite author 4) Looking for shoes on Ebay 5) Reading a contract for a mortgage 6) Reading a text in a test than answering questions on it 7) Reading the text on a computer game 8) Reading a Wikipedia page for your homework 9) Reading a Snapchat message 10) Summarising a lengthy piece of information into a leaflet Can you use more than one for some of the above circumstances?

9 Summary Create a poster / fact sheet to be put up in your classroom defining the different ways to read and where each type of reading may be useful as a skill in the real world.
