Body Planes, Directions, Cavities and Abdominal Regions

Anatomical Position stand erect face forward arms at side
palms facing forward feet slightly apart

Three main body planes:
Transverse (horizontal) plane: divides into top and bottom Midsagittal (median) plane: divides into equal left and right halves Frontal (coronal) plane: divides into front (anterior, ventral) and back (posterior, dorsal)

Use proximal and distal when referring to
the extremities (arms and legs).

Body Cavities cranial cavity: brain spinal cavity: spinal cord
thoracic cavity: esophagus, lungs, heart upper abdominal cavity: stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder, most of large intestine pelvic cavity (lower abdominal): urinary bladder, reproductive organs, last part of the large intestine
