Total RNA was purified from five to ten plants grown for 13 days on MS medium and transcript levels of the MCA1 and MCA2 genes were measured by quantitative real-time PCR as described in Materials and Methods in the text. Expression of the EF1a gene was also examined as a control. The transcript levels of each gene were compensated with those of b-tubulin as an internal standard. The transcript levels in mutants are presented relative to those in the wild type, which have been assigned a value of 1. Values are the mean + SD for three independent experiments. MCA2ox-1, MCA2ox-2, and MCA2ox-3 represent three independent MCA2-overexpression lines. *p < 0.005; **p < 0.05.
