George Washington Carver was honored by the United States with a stamp twice. Once in 1948 and again in He discovered and taught farming techniques that are still used today. He told poor farmers to use swamp muck instead of fertilizers. What did this add to the soil? He told farmers who had grown cotton in the same fields for many years to switch to peanuts or soybeans for a few years to replenish the soil. What is this called? He is best known for all the uses he developed for the peanuts. He testified before Congress in 1921 to ask for a tariff on imported peanuts to protect the American crops. How would that help? (Social Studies connection!) enrich croplands with swamp muck instead of fertilizers. His idea of crop rotation proved to be most valuable. Through his work on soil chemistry, Carver learned that years of growing cotton had depleted the nutrients from soil, resulting in low yields. But by growing nitrogen-fixing plants like peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes, the soil could be restored, allowing yield to increase dramatically when the la Both classes May 8th

List both the compositional and mechanicals layers in order from the inside to the outside. How are rocks and minerals similar and how are they different? What are the classifications for igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Use this information on page one of your Perfect Planet project.

8 Cerebral Stretch #171 Which of the global winds brings Georgia its weather? The Doldrums and the Horse Latitudes are areas of no wind. Why? 3. Which of the ocean floor features is caused by convergent boundaries? Which by divergent boundaries? 4. Which type of air mass would arrive from the Gulf of Mexico? 5. Which type of front causes thunderstorms and then cooler weather?

9 Picture 1 Cerebral Stretch #172 What are three types of small bodies in the solar system? Where do each of them hang out? What do we call the moon phases when the amount of light is increasing each night? Describe a new moon – how it looks and why. Which eclipse is of a solar eclipse and which is a lunar eclipse? In which part of the earth would people see each eclipse? Which moon phase happens in each type of eclipse? Picture 2

Where are convection currents in the earth and what do they do? When a continental plate collides with an oceanic plate why is the oceanic plate usually subducted under the continental plate? What happens in a CC convergent boundary? Which rock type is frequently stratified?
