2 Why are routines important?
Babies are totally dependent on adults who need to be caring and flexible. All babies need different levels of attention. Childcare practices vary from setting to setting. It is important to know about and respond to the needs of the primary carers as well.

3 This will involve working with parents and carers as partners.
What are the needs of babies? Emotional: Continuity and consistency 2. Physical contact. 3. Security and socialisation 4.Stimulation

4 Food, warmth,cleanliness
Physical: Food, warmth, cleanliness Rest, sleep and exercise Fresh air and sunlight Safety and medical intervention if needed

5 How can care be planned, considering the fact that babies grow?
– NAP TIMES- you need to know how much sleep is needed and at what times. This will change! b) – BATHING – usually done by main carers but may be necessary within some settings. Be aware of cultural needs c) –NAPPY CHANGES – must be regular and Especially after a bowel motion. d) FEEDING – make sure baby is not kept waiting Weaning at 6months-allergies/intolerances.

6 d) MOBILITY – allow time for the baby to move
and ensure enough space. d) PLAY PREFERENCES!! e) STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT – this is where your observational skills become very important! Ensures the correct sort of toys etc.

7 ROUTINES MUST NOT BE HURRIED:
Q – How do babies learn through routines? Q – What routines are there in a care setting? BABIES DO NOT BENEFIT FROM RIGID ROUTINES- THEY NEED TO HAVE A DEGREE OF FLEXIBILITY. BABIES WILL EVENTUALLY SETTLE INTO ROUTINES.
