Aneira was born at one minute past midnight on July 5, 1948 after an 18-hour labour and was the first child in her family to be born in a hospital.
Aneira is now a Nurse.
As the clock struck midnight, signalling the arrival of July 5, 1948, Aneira Thomas’s mother was nearing the end of an 18-hour labour.
“She’d had children before, and she knew the midwives were usually telling you to push,” Aneira says.
“But they were saying, ‘Hold on, Edna!’ Then the clock ticked past 12. ‘Push,’ they said, ‘push!’”
According to the family her mother Edna held on until midnight so her husband did not have to pay the midwife a shilling and sixpence for the birth!!
