Let’s do some cutting!!! G L U E G L U E
2
Motion Defined as “when the position of an object is changing.”
An object is in motion when the distance between two objects is changing.
3
How can we tell if an object is in motion?
Use a Reference Point, A place or object used for comparison to determine if an object is moving
4
The rate at which something or someone is able to move.
The distance an object travels in a certain unit of time.
5
Distance Speed = Time D S T
6
Speed Problem A person drives a car for 5 hours and goes 150 miles, how fast was he traveling? 150 miles _________ Speed = = 30 miles per hour 5 hours
7
Change in motion Increase in speed Decrease in speed Change in direction The rate at which velocity changes.
8
An object may be moving at a constant speed, but if it changes direction, it is said to be accelerating.
10
Velocity Speed in a certain DIRECTION!
If you change either the speed OR the direction the velocity changes.
11
VELOCITY = SPEED + DIRECTION
If you change the speed, does the velocity change? Yes If you change the Direction does the Velocity change? So if you change either the speed or direction, velocity changes.
12
Velocity Problem 300 miles _________ Velocity = = 60 mph NORTH 5 hours
A person drove a car from Houston to Dallas. It took 5 hours to go the 300 miles. What was his velocity? 300 miles _________ Velocity = = 60 mph NORTH 5 hours Direction from Houston to Dallas
13
Is it accelerating? A ball rolling to a stop?
YES… it is slowing down, or decelerating.
14
Is it accelerating? A car traveling at 30 mph then going up to 60 mph to pass a slower moving car? Yes… it changed its speed from 30mph to 60mph
15
The moon revolving around the Earth
YES! The moon may be at a constant speed, but it is constantly changing directions
16
Let’s get to cutting!
17
Graphing Speed Constant Speed - Never changes speed.
18
Acceleration - The object is getting faster
19
No motion/speed -Time is changing but the distance is NOT.
20
Object turning around - The object is turning around and heading back towards the origin/starting point
21
Let’s get to cutting!
22
Graphing Acceleration
The object is getting faster A steeper slope, the faster the speed Final velocity – Initial Velocity) / time
23
Deceleration - The object is getting slower.
24
Constant Speed Never changes speed
25
No motion/speed - Time is changing but the speed remains at zero
26
Let’s get to cutting!
27
Graphing Practice
31
What was the speed of the object at Point A?
Distance = 250 meters A Time = 15 seconds
32
Speed = distance/time B 250meters/15 seconds = 16.6 m/s Distance = 250 meters A Time = 15 seconds
33
Distance = 500 meters What was the speed of the object at Point B? B A Time = 30 seconds
34
Distance = 500 meters Speed = distance/time B 500meters/30 seconds = 16.6 m/s A Time = 30 seconds
35
A straight line means the object has a constant speed.
It is neither speeding up nor slowing down.
36
Object A Object B Which object had the faster speed?
37
Object A Object B 500m/30s = 16.6m/s 100m/30s = 3.3m/s
38
The steeper the slope, the faster the speed.
39
Describe the object’s motion at point A.
It has stopped.
40
What is the speed of the object at Point B?
0 m/s, a flat line means the object has stopped.
41
What is the object’s speed at point C?
5 seconds 50 Meters A C B 50m / 5s = 10 m/s
42
What is the Average Speed of the Object?
Average speed = total distance / total time D A C B 350m / 30s = 11.6 m/s
43
S = 16.6 m/s An upward curved line means that the object is accelerating. It keeps getting faster and faster. S= 8.8 m/s S= 6.6 m/s
44
How do we find acceleration?
(Final velocity – Initial Velocity) / time
45
V = d/t V = 500 m/30 s V = 16.6 m/s (16.6 m/s - 0 m/s) / 30 s
(Final velocity – Initial Velocity) / time V = d/t V = 500 m/30 s V = 16.6 m/s (16.6 m/s - 0 m/s) / 30 s (16.6m/s) / 30 s = .55m/s 2
46
A downward sloped line means the object is slowing down (decelerating).
