POC/Title and or Institute/Website: Matthew E. Portnoy, Ph.D., NIH SBIR/STTR Program Director Follow Mission/interest - Advancing Medicine Through Innovation. Biomedical and behavioral research and development funding to explore the technological feasibility of projects with commercial potential. SBIR/STTR aims to commercialize tangible products and services. Uniqueness - NIH SBIR/STTR has multiple receipt dates, dozens of solicitations, and the ability to revise and resubmit unfunded grant applications. NIH will not be the customer, focus on commercialization into open market. Budget - Annual SBIR + STTR budget ~$920M (FY17). Topics - More than 600 SBIR/STTR topics per year plus investigator-initiated research encouraged. Awards (Amount and Dollar Range) - ~800 Phase I’s up to $225K each and ~ 270 Phase II’s per year range up to 1.5M each. Grants vs Contracts - 90% grants, 10% contracts. Solicitations (Open/Close) - Omnibus and most solicitations; September 5, January 5, April 5; More than 50 open solicitations, some with custom dates. Commercialization Assistance - NIH offers the Phase I Niche Assessment Program and Phase II Commercialization Assistance Program annually for SBIR and STTR awardees. The NIH I-Corps program is an intensive entrepreneurial immersion course for scientists.
